About Susanne Fredholm

Area of research

The uses of heritage in development
The research project focuses on international heritage planning and management with focus on historic urban built environments as resources for economic development.

The aim is to study contemporary theoretical and methodological principles of heritage as an economic driver of change and the way this is understood and carried out at the various levels of official heritage planning and management.

The empirical material is based on two case studies in Ghana and Sweden, focusing on policy and practice regarding the uses of heritage for development, in places where the values of the historic built environment are interpreted differently by various stakeholders.

The objective is to understand the interplay between intentions, methods and results of regeneration projects in order to highlight limitations and opportunities for contextual methodological advancements for heritage planning and management in development projects.
