The project aims to illuminate the complex interplay between sacred and secular values in the management of the Church of Sweden’s properties and to cultivate knowledge that supports the development of church conservation practices.
The project addresses the legally protected cultural heritage of the Church of Sweden, its preservation, use, and future development. A number of contemporary changes, including a decline in membership, have diminished the ecclesiastical need for churches. Since the separation of church and state, the management of church properties has been clearly divided into different areas of responsibility with different roles for the Church of Sweden and the state.
The project also illuminates how values other than those of religion or conservation are activated in and around church properties in these new circumstances. It examines the collaboration among various actors, and how new forms of ownership, management, and use of church properties can be developed.
